Prologue (translated from official website)
There is a story of a grand love torn apart by the waves of history. It is an incomparable love story, crossing the borders of Russia and Japan and surmounting fifty years time.
The true story of one woman who continued to wait because she loved, and one woman who said farewell because she loved.
And a man who, bolstered by the love of these two women, struggled through the most extreme of circumstances and survived.
Can you believe it? Broadcast on "Kiseki Taiken! (Miraculous Experience!) Unbelievable" in February 2004 with tears and talk throughout all of Japan, this is a true tale of the miraculous love of one man and two women that still exists even to this day.
Cast
ABE Hiroshi as HACHIYA Yasaburou
KUROKI Hitomi as HACHIYA Hisako
Elena STEJKO as Klavdiya LEONIDOVNA
KONNO Mahiru as HACHIYA Kumiko
SASAKI Kuranosuke as YASUOKA
HIROSUE Ryouko as MAKISE Kyouko
Special Thanks to:
[D-W]Katsu for uploading the RAW.
Vocabulary and Tidbits
1. Inaba no Shirousagi: "The White Hare of Inaba," a fictional tale from the Kojiki, the oldest surviving "historical" text in the Japanese language; Inaba is an old name for a region in what is now Tottori Prefecture
2. The poem/song that Yasaburou gives to Hisako before they leave for Korea is a very famous poem by Ariwara no Yukihira, and is one of the Hyakunin Isshu ("One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets"), a famous collection of Japanese waka poetry; I have borrowed the beautiful translation for this particular poem from Prof. Mark Jewel's excellent website here.
3. Maidzuru Harbor: a harbor in Kyoto Prefecture that, historically, was the harbor of entrance for ships carrying Japanese repatriates (引揚者) from the Asian continent after the war
4. manjuu: a steamed bun with a filling inside, such as bean paste
Notes
To the few of you waiting patiently for the subtitles, here they are!
This is an amazingly beautiful story that I hope you will enjoy as much as I did.

Hie, super, duper thank you's to Quashio!!!!!
I would like to know what software/technique/process s/he uses to create subtitles so quickly? I'd love to get my wife started helping out.
We need to pay back some of the debt we owe after several years of taking advantage of other people's efforts.
I could help with the mechanical/technical aspects while she does the translating.

Both the Russian spelling and the romanisation are incorrect:
It's обещание, not обешание and the standard romanisation is [obeshchaniye].
