Churasan [Eng Subs] (Complete)

Hello all,

We're ready with the next full week of 'Churasan,' Week 15 - Episodes 85-90. You can find them as always on the top post on the first page. Thanks for checking them out.

A quick note about episode 87:

Episode 87 created some controversy in Japan when it originally aired. Since it involves a drinking contest, many people became upset with that and protested to NHK. As a result, parts of the original episode were changed for subsequent airings. For the DVD, the only thing affected were a couple lines of Obaa's narration.

For the release being uploaded to d-addicts, which was the second full airing of the series that showed on cable, another change was made. In addtion to the missing/altered Obaa narration, and in order to cut down the amount of time spent on the drinking contest, a minute or two of the episode was cut out completely. The removed scene continued the drinking contest some time after it has started and before the scene in 'Yugafu.' To fill in the missing time in the episode, a segment was added to the end with the song "Best Friend" being sung while an "Okinawan Word Trivia" offered an explanation of various Okinawan terms.

For those of you who might be interested, I'm attaching to this post a copy of my translation notes which includes the missing scenes and dialog in their original context. This is not a subtitle file. This is just a plain text file with my various notes, etc that I use when translating an episode. You can follow along with the episode as it plays and see where the missing scenes/narrations would have been in the orginal episode.

BTW: The "Okinawan Word Trivia" at the end of episode 87 (which I have translated, rather than the song) does include a spoiler for an event that occurs much later in the series. You may want to skip this segment if you don't want to be spoiled.

Time again for more 'Churasan.' This time we have all six episodes of Week 16, episodes 091-096. We hope you enjoy them. Please look for them on the top post on the first page.

Since this marks the first time we get to see Mariya-san's fairy tale about Eri and Fumiya in print, I thought I'd take some time and translate a little of it for you. "Churasan' was popular enough during it's aring that various merchandise was produced as a by-product. One of those items was the the fairy-tale book Mariya writes during the course of the series. Complete with watercolor pictures, it recounts the story of Eri and Fumiya from a slightly different perspective than the series itself.

I've translated the first paragraph of the book for you here. Please enjoy!

ガジュマルの樹の下で
作:　城ノ内真利亜

信じれば叶うなんて嘘たよ思っていた。
この小さな恋の物語をE・Uに贈る。

浅葱色の海から真っ赤な頭の男の子がめっと顔をだした。手には青い背に黄色がかった腹の大きな魚を持っている。相変わらずうまくとるもんだと思ったときには、赤い髪の男の子は、もう根元あたりに腰を下ろしていた。人さし指で器用に魚の左目をくり抜くと飴玉をほおばるかのように口のなかで転がす。そうして、手に持った魚えおぶんと眼下に広がる海に放り投げた。黄色い魚はきれいな放物線を描きながら、浅葱色の海へと消えた。海の色が碧へと変わった。ぼくの一番好きな、この海の色だった。

And then, taking the fish in hand, he cast it back into the wide sea that spread out beneath him. The yellow-tinged fish drew a clear parabola, and vanished into the pale blue sea. The sea then changed color to a pale green. That was my favorite color of the sea."

Hey everyone,

At long last, we make it past the big 100 of 'Churasan,' with this release of Week 17, Episodes 097-102! You can find them, as always, on the top post on the first page. Please pick it up!

This ends what I like to call "Act III" of 'Churasan.' Eri has completed another stage of her life, and we now move on to new adventures with our leading character. Look forward to "Act IV."

BTW: In case you were interested, the name of the song that Keitatsu sings with his band, 'Black Sugar,' is called "ムイミ" which means "Nonsense." I put as many lines of the song as I could squeeze into the episodes where the song is played, but there were two or three lines I just couldn't get in... sorry.
