Basically another piece of crap from Wong Jing. If you've read the novels, don't expect a faithful or even decent adaptation. If you're familiar w/ this guy's work, do expect a lot of sappy melodrama, cheap thrills, and illogical plots. Most of the main characters are miscast; Athena's character should be played by Gillian, Anthony Wong should swap w/ Alex Fong, and the young Miao Roulan is so annoying as to be ridiculous. If you're a die-hard Jin Yong fan, don't waste your time.

Thanks for the short review. I think I'm gonna pass up on this one. Other people are giving this series rave reviews just because Gillian is in it. |
Gillian's character is also miscast; in the novel, her character is just an ordinary-looking and diminutive girl. Wong Jing knows that if Gillian is in the drama, a lot of people will watch it. What I don't understand is why he casted Athena in that particular role; as much as I like her she's just a bit too old to portray that character in the novel.

| I just found out that The Handsome Siblings 2005 (Xiao Yu Er Yu Hua Wu Que) starring Dicky Cheung and Nick Tse is also directed by Wong Jing. God, that series is butchered like hell and is utterly horrible. I only watched half of the series. Couldn't bear to watch any further. Now I'm convinced NOT to watch Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain.

I'm starting to watch this. I'm still at the part when the main characters are still kids. So far, it's alright. Tho, I'm all over the fight scenes. (Now I remember why I loved HK action films...)
Since I'm not a Jin Yong fan, I don't mind and don't know when the piece is being butchered. I guess I'm a better TV viewer that way. As for the characters, I don't see why Alex Fong should swap places with Anthony Wong. He did a decent job protraying an admirable martial artist, yet wholely pathetic man. If I were Hu Fei, I will kill Miao Renfeng not to avenge his parents' death but to save the world from being totally destroyed by an idiot.

Remember, you're talking about the schlockmeister that gave us the trashy cat III 'Raped by an angel' movies. He's been called 'The master of crappy cinema', and is hated w/ a vengeance by a lot of HK movie lovers.

If you've read the novels, you'll be furious because the novels are SO much better than his crappy and totally UNNECESSARY alterations (even the 80's TVB version has way fewer changes). As for Alex Fong, my comments are based solely on the characterization in the novels; if you've never read them to each its own. BTW, I don't hate WJ for his movies; I've watched a few of his earlier movies and subsequently avoid them like the plague; my negative comments are based only on my observations to this drama, as a fan of the novels.

| I'm not a loyalist to the novels. I can stand alterations to the plots but I won't tolerate crap. The Handsome Siblings is one such example of a perfectly good story being butchered to death. I won't trust the same producer to deliver a good story unless he follows the original story faithfully.

Gillian Chung in a cdrama? hmms...i don't know if I'm ready for that..... her acting in HK films has yet to wow me.
Alex Fong, we're talking about the buff and bodacious Alex Fong here and not the teen-booper swimmer turned singer/actor Alex Fong here right??
I guess the only up side side is that Athena Chu will be starring in it.....though it's been a while since I've watched anything with her in it. That and the fact that I really enjoyed TVB's adaptation of "The Fly Fox of Snowy Mountain 1999". _________________ currently need to catch up on all new dramas!♥♥♥

Alex Fong is the actor that appeared in Derek Yee's acclaimed "One Nite in MongKok", not the "teen-booper swimmer turned singer/actor".
On the TVB 1999 remake - If you haven't read the novels or seen the older TVB series then maybe it's not so bad, but here're a few quotes from various reviews on the web, for the benefit of Jin Yong fans who haven't watched the series (I haven't seen it):
From http://www.geocities.com/televisioncity/network/7039/snowy.html:
"...According to various rumors TVB only managed to attain the rights to one of the novels, "Flying Fox of the Snowy Mountain", to make this series. TVB did not have the rights to "The Young Flying Fox". Despite this TVB felt confident that their own scriptwriters could come up with something just as brilliant....They should have thrown in a set of free stake knives for every episode watched, so we can aim them at the scriptwriters. Many characters have been eliminated, or have had their names changed. The plot too has taken radical twists and turns...."
From http://www.spcnet.tv/reviews/review.php?rID=132:
"The remake that even Jin Yong, the original author himself, could not watch because of the drastic alterations TVB has made to the characters and story, "Flying Fox of Snow Mountain" is in truth one of the worst nightmares for Jin Yong novel lovers....Mui's controversial rape scene in "Flying" has many in fury because it is so outrageously unfaithful to the original story. It is even almost a copycat from Yeung Gor and Sui Lung Lui's situation in "Return of the Condor Heroes...."
