Interesting... I didn't expect more than half of the users here to rely on subtitles. I moved from China when I was less than 2 years old, but I speak fluently and can read most of the subtitles.

And I really attribute a large amount of proficiency in Chinese, especially reading, to watching dramas. By the time I stopped going to Chinese school, my reading skills were leagues above the rest of the kids, mostly just from watching dramas and reading the subtitles.

For anyone interested in improving their Chinese, I really do highly recommend watching dramas. Without subtitles if you can get by, or focusing at least ignoring them as much as is possible.

Oh, and my languages: English and Chinese fluently, French proficiently enough to have a conversation, read novels, write etc, though watching movies is a bit of a struggle sometimes for the slang.

first native language: korean
2nd native language: english
somewhat fluent language: japanese (still learning can get by somewhat without subs but still need subs to understand fully especially technical jargon however reading and writing sucks since my kanji knowledge sucks)
should know because of the number of years spent studying but can still only barely scrape by in: Mandarin & French

i'm quite surprised at the number of people who don't speak any of the 3 asian languages of the dramas found here. wow there must be a lot of nonasians here too. i'm quite surprised that asian dramas are so popular outside of asia. sort of proud too Tongue

since i'm fluent enough in english and korean to translate directly when someone is speaking it makes me think that i should move my lazy butt and become a fansubber...and yet i can't stand korean dramas...so i don't think i would be able to watch it long enough to translate it...hahaaa.. Tongue
