DA members:
looking for suggestions, constructive comments and insights.
currently, we have several main avatar banners: MODERATOR, REVIEWER, FANSUBBER, and UPLOAD ADDICT.
we are planning to do away with these and come up with some brand new ones.
main problems:
- some members hold multiple roles, but we do not have multiple titles/banners. (ie. aNToK is a reviewer, fansubber AND uploader. but we can only give him one banner.)
- there are various levels of uploading. to get a 'upload addict' banner, you have to upload one complete series. but some people upload 10-15 eps of variety tv stuff. we need to establish a better criteria for getting the upload banner.
- especially with the fansubber banner, there's role and achievement discrepancies. some people time or translate, others do everything. make multiple banners?
ok then:
* i will hold a AVATAR BANNER DESIGN CONTEST. but hold on! we first need to determine which banners we will have. DO NOT SUBMIT ANYTHING YET!!
* NO, you may not upload your own banner. that's what your avatar is for. of course if you assign yourself a rank, that's pretty tacky. (i thought about allowing fansub groups to upload their own, but there's too many problems with that.)
* we will wipe out the old banners so EVERYONE will lose their banners. you may apply to have a new banner based on the new criteria. if you meet the new criteria based on past performance, you will be awarded the new banner (as long as you can show proof of your past work).
====================================================
1. how many banners should we have? and what ranks? (ie. moderator, uploader, mega-uploader, timer, translator, solo fansubber, etc.) we want to keep it simple, yet diverse. we're not planning to have 50-100 different ranks.
2. what will be the CRITERIA for attaining these ranks? should they be hard to get? or fairly easy?
3. any additional comments

example:
these should be the titles, and the criteria for getting them---
UPLOADER - person who uploads 10-49 torrents of anything (eps, ost's, variety, etc.)
MEGA-UPLOADER - person who uploads 50+ torrents of anything or at least 10gigs.
TIMER - has timed at least 5 eps.
QC - has qc'd at least 5 eps.
VSS - has VSS'd at least three series in the past.
SOLO FANSUBBER - has released at least 3 hard/soft-subbed episodes or files.
ADMIN/MODERATOR - self explanatory
etc. you get the idea....

If you have multiple titles aren't you going to end up with a lot of images? You'd need one for each possibility; if someone did everything but translating you would have a big list too. I suppose you could make it so people who do multiple things would pass though each image, i.e. if they did QC and timing you could have QC at 3eps and timing at 5, though then it'll get a bit messy.
I think it'd be easier if you just went with what you did the most of, or choose yourself which sounds best.

heh, i think the admin/moderator badge may be pretty much obsolete since your nick colors already define the status...
and the fact that several people do different jobs in the fansubbing category is like you stated a problem with a single title banner...
distinguishing between uploaders and subbers makes sense to me, but whether someone qcs, times, typesets or encodes
doesn't really matter to me personally, since all those jobs make the final product, so fansubber would suffice for me as well...
i do see a difference though between people who work on one or two episodes and people who continue working on subs over a long time...
it's just a suggestion, i'm fine with keeping the regular subber banners, but if you wanted to give credit for dedication, you could always
have the regular banners evolve with embedded icons, such as 1-10 eps 1 star, 11-20 eps 2 stars and the like...
i'd be more interested to see who busts their butts for this community and who just dabbles in it for a bit to flash a banner around...
someone said it in the calling all fansubbers thread i believe, that everybody is a fansubber these days, so giving credit to those
who stick with it and continue to donate their time for others' enjoyment is something i'd rather see than the QC, timer, project manager, whatever, distinction...
just a thought...
EDIT: then again, a combination of evolving banners and subbing job distinction is also possible... _________________

Given the existing banners, I think they're fine. What you have to do instead is change your idea of exactly how the banner system works.
Think of them like ranks in the military. All enlisted people are privates in the beginning. Then later they get upgraded to seargent, drill seargent, etc. If you're a drill seargent, you don't also refer yourself as a private. Although you were all these other ranks before, you're only recognized by one rank.
With the existing banners, what Ruroshin should do is actually sort them in order of rank, or in this case of importance and value to the D-Addicts community. My ranking would then be (from most important to least):
Administrator
Fansubber
Capturer (I added this one)
Moderator
Upload Addict
Reviewer
In aNToK's situation, he should be ranked as a Fansubber, seeing with his multi-level contributions to the community, with fansubbing being the most important of all his skills. IMHO fansubbing is the 2nd most important role in the community - higher than even the moderators. Moderators maintain order with the community, but fansubbing makes watching dramas possible regardless of order within D-Addicts.
I'm actually considered a capturer. A capturer is someone who captures dramas off of broadcast TV and contain subtitles within the broadcast. I don't particularly fall under the fansubber category, but the result products I offer is exactly the same result as what a fansubber would provide.
That's basically how I see things with the banners, and the importance of these contributions.

thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming.
yes, i am trying to establish a system where you won't need to 'choose' your banner, it will state your multiple titles. i think the best way to do this is use a standard background img (like we do now), and either just write in the titles, or like ironicwave suggested, put stars or icons. OR, as chunu said, we use an animated gif.
Lowest: you brought up a good point. will have to figure that one out. but instead of separating timer, qc, editor, translator, etc, we could just say 'fansub group member' or 'fansub contributor'.
groink: thought of this one too. i was on a forum where they actually used the military ranks (private, sgt, general, etc.). i also liked the creativity, but i think it may instigate too much argument if we rank roles instead of standard titles. one person might think a capturer is ranked higher than an uploader. others may not. i rather just use simple terms (baby drama addict, junior drama addict, super drama addict, etc.)
but i still would like to hear more._________________ Use THUMBS UP/DOWN buttons to KEEP or DELETE posts.

| We don't have any reviewers anymore. The reviewing team dissolved with the establishment of DramaWiki. And, in my opinion, distinguishing between the fansubbing positions isn't necessary. You can find all the bloody details on the team's website if you want.

I, too, would rather just see "fansubber". I was going to ask for a banner in the other thread, since I've been doing stuff with KDA as of late, and I saw the link to this thread. I just think there are so many different titles/roles in the fansubbing process, that it might get too complicated to show exactly what each fansubber does.
Anyway, I look forward to seeing the new banners, and hopefully eventually getting one for myself!

athaclena: for what it's worth, awarded you one for now.
moving (again) to 'general discussions' for more exposure...._________________ Use THUMBS UP/DOWN buttons to KEEP or DELETE posts.
