hmm, why is everybody asking about tv ratings these days? scratch

ratings are calculated and published by marketing research companies. They gather the information either by interviewing people or they monitor what people watch on tv through special setopbox-like devices. For example TNS Media Korea monitors 2,000 households using TNS 4900 Series Picture Matching meters. The ratings are calculated from the stats they collect from those 2000 households.

Here's what I wrote on Wikipedia:

The rating system is very simple. All the major Japanese television networks make up the Japanese television market. A research firm must determine the size of an average audience. The audience size is determined using two factors: the amount of content that is transmitted and the amount that is received, as market size varies from firm to firm. The actual viewer count of a given episode is calculated using a variety of polling methods. Ratings are calculated using a percentage or point system. This is based on the episode's viewership numbers divided by the market size. Finally, the numbers are published on the research firms web site.

As for why people all of a sudden are looking at the ratings... My guess is that with the mediocre drama airing at the moment, people are having trouble deciding what to watch. Why now? For Japanese television, traditionally summer is the worst of the four TV seasons. It's almost like Christmas... A store expects slow sales during the 9 months of the year, but have huge sales during the holiday season (Autumn). So the store will put out their best products during this season. Same thing with television; TV networks play their mediocre material during the summer season, but save their really good stuff for their winter season. That's the time when it is to damn cold to do anything outside, so the best thing to do is to stay indoors and watch TV.

Right now, there are a lot less people watching television during the summer season. This is why the numbers are low - not because the shows are lousy, but because summer is the season people do anything OTHER than watch TV. TV is not the way of life for the Japanese. During summer, the Japanese love to travel (Waikiki hotels right now are BOOKED SOLID through the end of July, mainly due to the Japanese). They'll also participate in outdoor activities, stay with family in another city, etc. This is just the way of life. Even my drama watching has been heavily cut seeing I'm playing golf almost everyday.

Good analysis. I also think that's a reason why this drama season IMO is so very weak. Putting out the heavy hitters during the lower drawing season makes no sense. If you look at the better seasons, i bet a lot of them were when it was COLD outside and everyone (except Groink who lives in a hot place!!) was inside watching dramas!!

How do asian drama ratings work? Is it different for Japanese, Korean, and Chinese? I am referring to the TV ratings that are reported in percentages. For an example of what I mean visit the Goong Dramawiki site: http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Goong. I also think this would be a helpful explanation topic, so I think a moderator should put this into a main forum. This would help a lot of addicts find their needs. Thank you Smile

merging with existing topic:

About ratings:
http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/viewtopic_37091.htm

excellent article about the differences between jp and u.s. entertainers:
http://www.japantoday.com/jp/feature/881

there was also a post by groink regarding the viewership percentages in japan split between the cable companies that was rather informative, but i can't find it now.
