Hi all,

Just uploading soft english subtitles for the 'Ruri no Shima' special. I hope you'll find it a good translation.

this special was uploaded by gyrzee.

Notes:

Shisa - シジ - Shisas are similar to gargoyles and are seen as protectors. They can be seen stationed on the rooftops of many buildings in Okinawa. The shisa is an integral part of the Okinawa culture. Shisa almost always come in pairs; one with its mouth open and the other with its mouth closed. A shisa with a closed mouth is the fiercer of the two and is seen as the one which dispells evil spirits from entering a dwelling. The pair is not one male and one female, however. Both are male, as can be seen by the presence of manes.

Asadoya Yunta - 安里屋ユンタ - originates from Taketomi Island in Okinawa. It is a very popular song about a beautiful lady, "Asadoya nu Kuyama" who was brave enough to reject the wedding proposal from a government (i.e. Yamato - from the Japanese main islands) man. The Japanese government came to rule Ryuukyuu in the 1600's, so the song has a little anti-government theme. "Yunta" is a style of song which, in it's basic component, sets the Yaeyama songs and dances apart from the rest of Okinawa. Yunta sing about intensive labors (farming), a joy of and a prayer for an abundant harvest of crops, love, building houses, etc. in a narrative fashion.

Thanks:

I'd like to thank my editor for this special, Phoenix, for graciously agreeing to try and find all my errors. These subtitles were greatly improved by her input. Thanks, Phoenix!

Please enjoy the 'Ruri no Shima' Special!

Haruspex, Thanks so much for doing the Ruri SP... much appriciated.

Just a note: I see you changed the island's name from the (fictional) name that's used on the show ("Hatomijima") to the islan'd's name in real life ("Hatomajima"). Just so people don't get confused (as SO/SARS kept Hatomi in their subs): Hatoma is a real island in the Yaeyama Island group (the exterior shots were actually filmed there on the island) -- though for the show, they changed the island's name slightly from "Hatoma-jima" to "Hatomi-jima." So in the show, the island's name is "Hatomijima" but in real life, the island's name is "Hatomajima."

I was lucky enough to visit there this year while looking around the Yaeyamas. Nice small cozy little island, people very friendly. And thankfully there's no outward mention of Ruri being filmed there (no signs or anything, the way there is on Kohama Island, where there were "Chura-san location!" signs at various places).

Thanks for finishing up the show!
