"The story of Hwang Jin-Yi was told through several films starting decades ago, but to me the most shining portrayal was in Bae Chang-Ho's 1986 film. After all that's something you could expect from Bae, the best director of the 80s - even though compared to the 고래사냥 (Whale Hunting) series and 기쁜 우리 젊은 날 (Our Sweet Days of Youth) it wasn't as good. Lee Myung-Soo's spectacular art direction, Jung Il-Sung's beautiful cinematography, the surprising skills shown by the Bae Chang-Ho/Lee Myung-Se combo, Choi In-Ho's subtle script and of course Jang Mi-Hee's great acting made this one of the most interesting examples amongst the films telling this story. But it was a tad regretful that the the story focused so much on Hwang Jin-Yi's prostitution, overshadowing even her figure as Gisaeng. Of course most of the Gisaeng films of the 80s focused on sex, so compared to films like 어우동 (Eoudong) the only difference is the theme. This is a potentially very intriguing chance for the Drama, to finally show the life of Gisaeng beyond mere prostitution."
