Melbourne has won acclaim as Australia's favourite city, a poll has found.
Melbourne has beaten Sydney in an independent survey of style and romance, shopping, international sporting and cultural events, theatre, food and restaurants and nightlife.
More than 50 per cent of Australians believed Melbourne had the best shopping in the country, the Sunday Herald Sun said, and about the same proportion picked Melbourne as No.1 spot for sport and culture.
The Roy Morgan Research poll of 1300 people Australia-wide was conducted last month.
Sydney was regarded as the best city for nearby regional experiences.
Victoria was tops for touring options, regional food and wine, and was level with NSW and Queensland for spas.
The figures give a boost to Victoria in the competitive market for tourism dollars.
Victorian Tourism Minister John Pandazopoulos said Melbourne had long been
recognised as the nation's sporting capital, but "we now lead in culture, food, romance and nightlife".

I live in Clayton near Monash Uni. I didn't attend that university so I couldn't tell you much about the uni itself but I can tell that the Clayton shops have a wonderful array of asian gorcery stores and restaurants/ take away foods. There are three or four Korean, two indonesion, two Malaysian, Vietnamese, Japanese, Pakistani BBQ and two Indian restaurants. There is even a new BBQ chicken and chips shop that also sells Korean food...I haven't tried that one yet but I wonder if he does Kim-chi and chips?...mmmm..... I moved in about a year ago and I am so glad I did. I love the multicultural atmosphere and the food.
I don't think anyone else has mentioned that Melbourne is also the music capital of Australia. On any night of the week you could see any style of live music being played in various pubs and clubs across the inner city suburbs of Melbourne such as Fitzroy, Brunswick, St Kilda and Richmond. Some of the other larger cities in Australia have healthy live music scenes but none are as big as Melbourne. If you like music then be sure to head into the city and see some local bands...there are free newspapers (available at the uni I am sure) that will tell you who is playing where.
Anyway good luck with your studies at Monash!!

Hi there,
as what all the ppl said about Melb, I am totally agreed with. Personally, I found that Melb is a lovely city. I love the weather and the lifestyle. At the moment, I am in Syd for work. I wish I have the chance to move back to Melb. syd is too crowded and the criminal rate is higher than melb. I did my study at Caulf campus (Monash University), it is a small campus, the largest is Clayton, try there. I got lost once. hehhee...
Anyway, wish u all the best
