hehe, don't ask a native Melbournian about Melbourne, they're desperate to prove the city is just as important as Sydney. That is not to say it's a bad city you just tend to get a somewhat biased view. It does tend to hold a lot of events (Formula 1, Aus Open, C'wealth Games) to try and compensate for not having any major landmarks. Tongue

I've lived in various cities around Australia and overseas and am currently studying at Monash. You've only got two choices here if you want a "big, glamorous city" as you mentioned - Sydney or Melbourne. Casinos (which seem to be focus points of nightlife here) are pretty boring if you've been to any big ones in Europe or Vegas. I think most of the good restaurants in Melb are in the city which is about 30mins travel from the main Monash campus. Rent in a group house should be about AUS$70-$100 inc bills (a fair bit more if you stay on campus).

the weather here has always seemed pretty normal to me, much warmer than Europe but rarely too hot.

Hey, nice to hear you are studying at Monash. What do you think about the quality of Monash? And are you living on campus? If so, how's the atmosphere?

i also go to monash =D this is my third year

clayton monash is probably the most social uni u can find in melbourne in my opinion
(i use to go to deakin didnt like it) The only reason why melb uni is still ranked no1 is because its in the city. If monash was in the city its hands down Monash all the way.
Laugh (p.s melb uni people are all stuck and think weird. Them and their gothic society)

You tend to get alot of *weekly* parties at monash. They make life enjoyable by holding events. Free beer sometimes (not as often as monash caulfield: but its only a short drive or train ride. Usually a free bbq lunch every few weeks. etc... Cool ) But yea lots of clubs/activities to keep you busy away from your studies Unsure

(drive)
I live approx 5 minutes from the city on the west side =D so it takes me about 30 minutes to get to uni off peak hour. Peak hour usually takes... about... 50 minutes. Peak hour with comonwealth games restriction takes about... 1.5 hrs.... (if you head from city to clayton around 5pm to 8pm you'll never make it. Word of warning if you want to live close to campus and party in the city(driving))

Public transport usually takes 1 hour from the city, so overall not that bad compared to driving.

P.s iv lived in sydney twice. When i was a little child and when i was there doing some stuff for the 2000 sydney games. Honestly comparing sydney to melbourne both are the same status i reckon, neither is better then each other. But if your coming to study then melbournes education system is far superior =D. You can always transfer to other states and bring along your credits, whereas if you transfer interstate uni tooo melbourne your going to have to restart the course from year 1.

About Krispy Kreme, I didn't know they had one in Melbourne already and there's going to be a 2nd one opening soon. I live near the city so I spend most of my time in the city...;;^^ But please pass along any details about it to me...;;^^

In re. to studying in Australia, as I did my studying here too, I would recommend Melbourne too. Melbourne is not as hectic as Sydney but it's not as quiet as the other places. So we have a nice atmosphere here. ^^ It's a good environment for studying, at least in my opinion. Smile

There's plenty of nice food and nice places to go to. The city has recently been more developed. There's more shopping places, cafes, restaurants etc opened.

I went to Sydney once, and I still liked Melbourne. The only things I liked about Sydney was that it has Kinnokuniya Bookstore and Krispy Kreme. LOL

hiya there,

i'm studying at uwa. I don't know what you are studying, but uwa is a good university (i'm not saying this because i'm studying there :p). Perth is a quiet city, but people here are friendly. There are a good mix of people here, you will find people originating from europe and asia.

In different circumstances, I would have chosen Melbourne. There's so much food in Melbourne that u can't find in Perth. Melbourne is also where all the events are...tennis tournament, horse racing, etc ... it's a great city.

congrats chelsea! cheers

you will love it in melbourne..although around this time of the year its starting to get really cold
for example, just one week ago it was around 25 degrees celcius on average. this week it has been like 17 on average! such a big change in such a short period of time
i think thats the main thing you will have to get used to in melbourne - the weather! it really is so unpredictable Crazy

I'm going next year february- july...how's the weather during that period actually...
its the end of the summer, autumn and begin of winter right?
I am living in the Netherlands now...and it's quite cold here...
at this moment it is about 8 degrees...last week there was a day when the temperature had reached 15 degrees for one day...so i think i have no problem getting used to the temperature fluctuations...

Waoh~ so many people in Monash! My sister has been accepted into Monash and will be entering around October

Unfortunately Monash doesn't offer what I want...

the University of Queensland does though. And I'm really attracted to the St Lucia campus~

Sorry I'm rather off topic here.....

congrats on getting in.

i definitely recommend staying on campus if you are only here for one semester, it's by far the easiest way to make friends. most Aussie students are quite young (17/18 in first year) and stick to their school friends, but if you stay on campus you get to meet all the international students desperate to make friends.

there are lots of rules and regulations for clubs these days, so there arent as many quirky little ones any more. instead of having lots of little clubs they have a few big ones with lots of members. there's a list of monash ones here: http://www.monashclubs.org/theClubs.php
no asian drama club Sad maybe i'll have to start one

if you can handle a european winter, you'll easily cope with melbourne weather Tongue

if you like kdrama consider doing korean, it's pretty fun and they use kdrama in our teaching Smile

I do like kdrama...I would like to learn the korean language...but i think it is quite difficult...and I won't use it a lot, so I leave it at self study...
I am not sure about which course units to attend yet...does anybody have a suggestion?
I am thinking of Chinese for dialect speakers.. I have attended the chinese school in the Netherlands and also a basic Mandarin course, but my knowledge of Mandarin is far from well-developed...
By the way I am studying business administration specializing in accounting and finance right now, so if you do have any suggestion... i hope it is related to my field of specialization.

I saw at the website that there are a lot of hall of residences...are there big differences between them? Does anybody know which one is better?

also one more thing, the internet here comes in two forms - slow and disconnected.

Hi,
It seems to me that you might be heading for Monash Uni, Caulfield Campus if you're doing Accounting course. I live 7 minutes walking distance from Caulfied Campus. Currently, it's autumn here and the weather for today is min 14, top 22 but 15 degree celcius at the moment.. It's true that there are plenty of asian foods around in terms of varieties and choice, more so than any other cities in Ausralia and even New York and Vancouver. I've been to the 2 cities and found them lacking in those areas.
Caufield has excellent public transport system. It has train, tram, bus and even taxi near the campus, basically next door! Caulfied and Clayton campuses are easily accesssable to uni students by the shuttle bus organised by Monash Uni for its students to use for their lectures and tutorials held at the 2 places AT NO COST! Caulfield is closer to the city and more convenient transpot wise.
There are student accommodation within walking distance to the campus which would be more expensive compared to sharing private lodgings with other students.
Melbourne Uni has always been considered better than Monash Uni because it requres better scores to get into the same course offered by both Unis, and may even be considered better than Sydney Uni eg if one misses out in getting into medicine from Melb uni, try Moansh and if not possible then Sydney Uni. This is an actual situation that I just described. It happened only early this year! Also plus the fact that Mebourne Uni is around longer than Monash Uni and has a well established reputation.
