Dear all,

I am thinking of studying at the UWA for one semester as an exchange student. I have never been in Australia before, but I am quite enthusiastic about it, and I'd like to know more about living over there. Are there any UWA students here? Or anyone from Australia? Please tell me more about Australia Mr. Green thnx a lot!!

I am a Canadian currently studying at the University of Queensland in Brisbane so I can't really comment on Perth but perhaps I can give a little information on Australia in general. Also, I think Brisbane and Perth are around the same size so my experience might be more similar to yours than someone from Sydney or Melbourne.

I guess how you find the city is partially dependent on what city you're from. I'm from Vancouver and there are some things I find better in Brisbane and other things I find better in Vancouver.

First of all, things I like about Brisbane. The weather! You get a lot more sun here and it's a lot warmer (this is the first time I've been in a place where it can be midnight and you can still be sweating profusely)...everyone seems more relaxed here. Also, compared to Vancouver it's a slower and more relaxed city which is just perfect for me. The people I found are very friendly and the city is clean and beautiful. I believe the education I'm getting is top notch (as should be UWA's) as an Australian education has an international reputation on some scale.

Things that may disappoint you. Brisbane (and I'm sure Perth as well) is not a "big international city" so you won't get the perks and glamour that you might find in places like Sydney...if there's anything people complain about here it's that there's not enough to do here. I would say personally my biggest disappointment coming from Vancouver is that there's a LOT less asian stuff here than I'm used to...it's hard to find asian grocery stores and the asian food isn't as good.

Big Smile its very easy to get around Perth since its small, you can catch the train, bus or even ferry! We have heaps of exchange students around from all parts of Asia! Living here is affordable and clean fresh air everyday! Laugh

Thank you all for the information. At this moment I am studying in The Netherlands. I really hope I will pass the selection. My first choice of location is Melbourne. I am very happy to hear that my university has just came to an agreement with the Monash University. Perth will be my second choice, because I have more feelings for a big, glamorous city. Also now in the Netherlands I am living in a busy city. I am more used to going out, shop and having nice a dinner Tongue than wonderful sceneries surrounding me. So if there are any comments on Melbourne, you are also welcome. Tell me...tell me...thnx

If you're looking for big cities in Australia this is the order in terms of population:

1. Sydney 4 million
2. Melbourne 3.5 million
3. Brisbane 1.7 million
4. Perth 1.4 million
5. Adelaide 1.1 million
6. Hobart 0.2 million

Syndey is cold, Melbourne is colder and Brisbane is warm. Don't know about the other cities since I haven't been there. When i say cold I mean for an Australian. In winter Sydney's average low temperature is about 8 °C, Melbourne is 6 °C and Brisbane is about 10 °C. In summer Sydney and Melbourne average about 25°C while Brisbane is about 30°C

I'm a Melbournian. And love it! I dont think i want to live in any other part of Australia than Melbourne. Compare Melbourne to Sydney:

Melbourne
------------
1. Alot of Asian
2. Everyone is very friendly and down to earth,
3. Lots of nice food from all around the world not just Asian. This includes a cast variety of asian food also available.
4. Cheaper rent, food, lifestyle compare to Sydney. (But when i say cheap i mean reasonable not cheap cheap. You can expect to pay $6-7 for those Asian noodles soup compare to $8-11 in Sydney)
5. Pretty girls/ guys
6. Our past time is not all about "poping" compare to alot of Sydney ppl (I'm generalising here from my experience).
7. We got heaps of fashion designers from Melbourne that are getting of have gotten acknowledgement from around the world. Eg. Allanah Hill, Tsubi, Betina Liano, Roy, Miss Sixty...just to name a few.
8. There's more night life during the week than Sydney i believe. (last year i went up to Sydney. We had no where to go, and nothing to do on Mon-Wed except getting high at someone house...or something like that).
9. The City Melbourne is designed so that it's in a grid shape, which means that everything is parallel to each other. Hence, its easy to get around and not get lost.
10. We also have the tram system around Melbourne city and into the suburb as well!!! no where else in Australia has this!
11. Crown Casino, opens 24x7
12. Most importantly. Krispy Kream is coming to Melbourne toO!! you really gota come to Melbourne!
13. Oh yeah, we can also have 4 seasons in one day. Can you get this anywhere else? i dont think so!

Sydney
---------
1. Sydney has more stable weather than Melbourne i must admit.
2. The famous Opera house
3. Bondi beach
4. Designers such as Sass&Bide lives here
5. Everything is more spaced out. Hence, you can get lost!
6. People can be a little bit snoppy sometime.
7. Houses are more expensive and so is the lifestyle. Which i reckon has the same quality as Melbourne only its more popular because it has the Opera house.
8. Star city - gambers haven

so you compare which is better! Hope you choose Melbourne. BTW, Monash university and Melbourne university is two of a few top university in Australia and has good reputations in the world aswell.

im from melbourne too =D not as expensive as sydney and the night life is just as good, if not greater. (i've heard people resemble Melbourne to vancouver but im not too sure =P )

Melbourne has the best tertiary education (universities) in Australia apart from Sydney Uni which is only good for vetrinary science

Krispy Kream is now 24/7 drive through =D and a 2nd store will open soon
(just to point that out)

Word of warning if you want to come to melbourne. During autumn and spring (march-may and Oct - novem) You will get 4 seasons in 1 day.

Also another warning Australia is not as culturally advanced as America so you might feel a little discrimination in our society. (Alot of my family from canada and california say that when they come over). We arent as open i guess to each other. (sorry if this is directed to americans it is a rough guideline of how social we are)

scratch

ALSO THE BIG ONE "I'm Sorry I love You Pilot episode was filmed here". We have the always beautiful albert park drive (where they filmed the driving in the city) which is currently hosting the grand prix at this time of year. They let you drive the track after all the races are done for a bit =D, Great ocean Road, which is i think the place they filmed the driving scenes/mountain.

Commonwealth Games is held soon 1 week to go -_- damn traffic
Our railway system has been upgraded so most of the trains are new and its not as dangerous as sydney with all the accidents and 10 year rust buckets. Yes as pointed out by misst3na melbourne is one of the very few cities in the world that still has a tram system.

Laugh

Come to Melbourne =D (dont even think about going to canberra, and adelaide is only good for dentistry)

only thing perth has is abalony catching season ^^;
*fact: did you know 10 years ago Australians didnt know what abalony were? and when asians went to the fish market theyd get it for $5 a kilo (grinning to their spoilt souls) Now since Asian food is so prized amongst cultures these days, Abalony is very scarce everywhere in australia apart from Perth.

hehe, don't ask a native Melbournian about Melbourne, they're desperate to prove the city is just as important as Sydney. That is not to say it's a bad city you just tend to get a somewhat biased view. It does tend to hold a lot of events (Formula 1, Aus Open, C'wealth Games) to try and compensate for not having any major landmarks. Tongue

I've lived in various cities around Australia and overseas and am currently studying at Monash. You've only got two choices here if you want a "big, glamorous city" as you mentioned - Sydney or Melbourne. Casinos (which seem to be focus points of nightlife here) are pretty boring if you've been to any big ones in Europe or Vegas. I think most of the good restaurants in Melb are in the city which is about 30mins travel from the main Monash campus. Rent in a group house should be about AUS$70-$100 inc bills (a fair bit more if you stay on campus).

the weather here has always seemed pretty normal to me, much warmer than Europe but rarely too hot.
