Eeekk, AVOID Iljimae !!! Iljimae is only good if you're a big fan of Lee Joon Ki. But in terms of storyline and directing, it's not that great. Also since you seem to love the "political battles" of Jumong and Kingdom of the Winds or even the "contest" aspects of DJG, my suggestions are:
- Seo Dong Yo and Queen Seonduk (both are same writers of Dae Jang Geum)
- For a storyline like Iljimae, but much better directed is Hong Gil Dong
- The Legend -- Fantasy historical
- Painter of the Wind - about art and girl pretending to be a guy starring Moon Geun Young_________________

I'd probably go with Queen Seon Duk since that's the most popular show right now in Korea.
I actually liked Iljimae more than Hong Gil Dong. Loved the female character, but HGD's comedy and visual direction just never worked with me. Iljimae -- in its cartoony, Naruto-meets-Batman sort of way -- actually did.
There's also Return of Iljimae, starring Jung Il Woo. This is truer to the original Iljimae comic, and the tone is very, very different. It's visually stunning, on par with Painter of the Wind.
There's also Princess Ja Myung Go. That show covers Prince Ho Dong, who you may recall was Muhyul's son in Kingdom of the Wind. You get to see a very, very different Muhyul as well.
