^Yep, sub files can be opened in Notepad. I never went that route though for SSA-related stuff, neat idea though......but of course make sure you don't check off "Always open w/ this program" for Notepad...lol.

If you want me to explain you how to display Japanese kanjis and kanas in your subs, I can explain you everything from the beginning to the end. Just let me know if you want to.
VobSub VDub filter doesn't handle only Western standard charsets (ISO-8859-1...) but also a lot of different charsets (SHIFT-JIS...) but not Unicode charsets (UTF-8...). The problem is that you need to encode your file with an appropriate charset. However a standard western Notepad can't do this whereas a Japanese Notepad can. That's why you need a charset convertor (like Mozilla Thunderbird) to convert your ssa file in the right charset.

Ok, I guess I don't have the japanese version of notepad so that didn't work very well.
I downloaded firefox like you said Le Piaf. Yeah can you tell me what to do next? I'll give it one last try. Thanks!

I never had to do any of that O__o I actually never used Notepad for anything SSA....but then again I used the {\fe128} and typed directly into it w/ my IME. I don't know what's up w/ all this w/out seeing the file so I'm stumped, I guess Tongue

I think the answer's there.

Seems that you've find an automatic charset convertor. Didn't manage to find a correct one.

I'll write my tutorial later today and try to post it asap.

You need :
Mozilla Thunderbird
Japanese fonts

Part 1: Thunderbird
1. Open Thunderbird
2. Tools -> Options -> Writing/Composing (the third one on the left)
3. Set the line break to 9999 (default : 72). "OK".
4. File -> New -> Message
5. Options -> Charset -> Japanese (Shift_JIS) You may have to customize the charset list before
6. Copy-paste the ssa file into the message window.
7. File -> Save as -> File
8. Save your text file as a new ssa.

Part 2 : VirtualDub
1. Open your file in VDub as usual and add the TextSub filter.
2. Open... -> Open your new ssa file by setting charset to SHIFTJIS.
3. Style... -> Select a japanese font (Mincho, Gothic...) and select SHIFTJIS instead of DEFAULT.

Now it shall work.

As long as you use appropriate unicode font's then you shouldn't have any problems using Japanese characters with a virtualdub plugin.

Try the url below for some more Japanese fonts:
a small list of japanese unicode fonts
