I am a big fan of rock music in general as I perform my own with a band and as a solo artist.
But anyways, I have become a big big fan of JRock.
I would like new artists to listen to...so here are the ones I listen to currently:
Nicotine
Asian Kung Fu Generation
The Back Horn
Orange Range
L'Arc~en~Ciel
Dragon Ash
Glay
Malice Mizer

I have enjoyed all the artists I've listened to so far...I would love to have more to listen to

My recommendations:
X Japan
hide
Siam Shade
camino
D'espairsRay
Shiina Ringo
HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR

Hm..and since you like Orange Range, I'd suggest ZZ. And a relatively new band that I think has a lot of potential is UVERworld. Their second single is coming out in a couple of weeks, but I really like what I've heard from them so far. I also really like the TRAX; they do both Korean and Japanese rock. They're also relatively new as they've only had four singles out, but they're pretty good.

Oh yes yes yes, I've heard of UVERworld. I have their first single. And I really enjoy it. Their sound seems unique in the way they mix different sounds. I look forward to their second single Smile
And also to their album

Welcome to Japanese Entertainment (or should i say Asian entertainment in general), where if you can sing, you can act! And if you can act, you can sing! Laugh
It depends on what your definition of "good bands" are and what music genre you're interested in, but here are a few off the top of my head that have had good success in both music and drama:
Fukuyama Masaharu (solo)
Matsu Takako (solo)
Shibasaki Kou (solo)
Ueto Aya (solo)
Oshio Manabu (LIV)
Fujiki Naohito (solo)
Nakayama Miho (solo)
Sakai Noriko (solo)

uhh.... lots of idols....

Virtually all the Johny's groups (if you like that sort of thing), but the more successful actors of the bunch are:
Nagase Tomoya (TOKIO)
Domoto Tsuyoshi (Kinki Kids)
Kimura Takuya, Nakai Masahiro, Kusanagi Tsuyoshi (SMAP)
Matsumoto Jun, Ninomiya Kazunari (Arashi)
Okada Junichi (V6)
Yamashita Tomohisa (NEWS...I think)

Good god, I could go on...... @_@

EDIT: Also thought I should add a couple "classic" guys:
Tamaki Koji (Anzen Chitai, solo)
Terao Akira (The Savege, solo)

Ah...well since this is now a general music thread....I am really enjoying m-flo...I have listened to two of their CDs and really enjoy them.

I also enjoy Shiina Ringo quite a bit, it is sad that she is no longer a solo artist.
However her material with Tokyo Jihen is also very very good Smile

I like Utada Hikaru, but mostly the music she does in japanese only...

Ketsumeishi is also an artist I enjoy.

You should check out Yuna Ito. She sings one of the songs in the movie NANA. Sort of a shameless promotion because I eat dinner at her parents' Japanese restaurant in Hawaii every Friday night. Smile

Also, if you have any questions about Japanese enka music, I'm the one to ask. It's my favorite genre of Japanese music.

I can't believe no one mentioned the ULTIMATE Japanese song of all time...

Sukiyaki by Kyu Sakamoro
thumleft thumright

All the other recommendations are good, but they do not even come close to this classic... Not Worthy ...not only that, its also a fun karaoke song too...
