well, soft subs and scripts for hardsubbing are basically the same. Just convert your srt/smi/sub/etc to ssa subs with SubtitleWorkshop. Then use the ssa file with your raw video (in VirtualDub with SubTitler filter) and encode your hardsubbed file. Perhaps you should improve the ssa script before doing the encoding (e.g. font settings, adding effects, ...).

Warnings!

If you must convert this SMI to SRT,
(or even SMI to SMI),
be aware this.
There are many overlapping subs.
For example:
Cast Name appears
while actor is talking.
This requires overlapping technique.
SRT is not good at this type of coding.
(Of course, subtitle position must be
shifted accordingly to show two
subtitles simultaneously.)
So what you end up with seeing is
CAST Names with no dialogs
or Dialogs appear like a flash of
a second and cast names remain on
the screen.
With SMI, you will see them all properly.
If yo must convert SMI to SRT, be sure
to watch the movie one more time and
adjust time frame manually. (or edit out
overlapping areas.)
Do not... Repeat! Do not rely on
conversion utility. They cannot really
handle massive tags in SMI.
If you don't want to do that, never ever
just convert and upload somewhere.

If it complains ( a Big Window will pop up).
Then, Audio - Full Process -Conversion
and save audio portion as wav file.

will rewrite the audio header with standard
CBR values during processing for better
compatibility. This may introduce up to
26930ms of skew from the video stream.
If this is unacceptable, decompress the

file and re compress with a constant bitrate
encoder.(bitrate:128.3+/- 14.5kbps)
If you ignore this message, TMPGEnc process will take
longer than usual. ( I mean very longer.....) and the
finished MPG has NO SOUND after all.

Setup the subtitles
Now, copy your subtitles and your AVI file into same directory on your HDD
and rename them so that their filenames are exactly identical, but the
extensions remain different.

.....Your player cannot find Eng sub because of the file name.
Kyoushi_ep02.avi

-----Your player can find Eng sub automatically.

Any Windows Player will do. (ex. Windows Media Player, Windows Media Classic,
WinDVD, PowerDVD, ATI File Player (if you use ATI All In Wonder series))
Double Click AVI. Or File open from the player.
Look at the bottom right hand side corner. Yes TASK bar.
Do you see a Green Arrow Icon? ( This is what Vobsub is all about. Right Click you get various menus)
If you don't see a Green Arrow Icon at all, there are 2 possibilities.
A - Vobsub was not properly installed. or You did not install Vobsub at all.
B - SRT or SMI sub file you downloaded was corrupted.
If you have several SRT or SMI subs for other movies, use one of them to test. Just rename it and
see if you see a Green Arrow Icon or not.
If you find a Green Icon, you know the file was corrupted.

You want to make an AVI file with hard coded sub.
How to combine Eng sub with AVI file by VIRTUALDUB
===============================================Virtual Dub
Video -Filters (or Ctrl+F)
--Filters window (Totally blank) opens
Click (ADD)
--Add Filter window opens with lots of entries
Find
Textsub v 2.23 ...If you cannot find it, you have not yet
installed VobSub. The latest at the time of this writing is
VobSub_2.23.exe . Install it with Custom installation and
specify where you had installed Virtualdub.
Textsub Setting... Open...and specify smi file and OK.
Now you see Filters Window with one entry: Textsub
Hit OK
Virtualdub File -preview
Do you see Eng sub? Then, you are 80% done.
Now save it with a compression of your choice (Video-
Compress on) with another instance of avi. This avi
contains video-audio-subtitles.
If you are comfortable, you can do Frame server
File -Start Frame server
You can feed it to TMPGenc.

You want to make SVCD (or VCD) disc immediately.
TMPGENC SVCD CONVERSION
===============================================
If you are converting this into SVCD (or lesser quality VCD), you can use TMPGenc directly.
Change Environment setting DirectShow Multimedia File Reader
Change this Priority of (2 or 3)
TMPGenc will insert sub directly.
NO need to use Virtualdub.
You might need to prepare wav file if the original avi has VBR problem.
(You use Virtualdub to extract WAV file) Just drop avi file to the VirtualDub
interface and wait for a second, if it complains, convert audio to 44100
and save it as wav file. Specify this wav file as audio source in TMPGEnc.

TMPGENC DVD CONVERSION & TMPGENC DVD AUTHOR to burn

Process is almost the same as SVCD listed above.
VIRTUALDUB...I USE TO GENERATE 48,000 HRZ
WAV FILE (By using To save WAV). Unless it is
a TV capture, TMPGenc often makes out of sync
or no sound at all in DVD creation.
Open AVI with VirutalDub.
(If VirutalDub complains about VBR, that's fine.)
Audio-Full Processing mode-->Conversion
48000 hz
And save Wav file as 48000wav.wav
Open TMPGEnc and use Wizard.
Select Format
DVD -NTSC
& Change CBR Linear PCM Audio (Default)
to CBR MPEG-1 Layer II Audio (MP2)
(Hit Next)
Video File ---specify AVI
Audio File ...Specify 48000wav.wav
(Hit Next)
(x)Other settings ...open MPEG Settings Windows
Video Tab--High quality(slow)
Advanced TAb--Video Arrange Method
--Regular Movies, with SMI, etc.,
use Full Screen (Keep Aspect Ratio)
In case of Hardcoded sub AVI file, maybe you end up
with Center (Custom Size) instead of Full Screen (Keep Aspect Ratio)

If you must put 2 avi files or 3 or 4
or even 4 avi files ( to make it around
120 min or so (as DVD-R or DVD+R capacity is 120 min), you can go by mathematics
at Wizard 4/5
2 files... Makes file size 50% of disk space
4 files...Makes file size 25% of disk space.
Create a folder called DVD somewhere in your hard disc.
ex C:\DVD D:\DVD E:\DVD,etc.
Now we go to the next step (application.)
Launch TMPGEnc DVD Author v1.5.15.59(at the time of writing, this
is the latest version.)
Follow this program. All files will be created in the folder
you just made. ex c:\DVD
At the end, the program will ask you if you want to burn a DVDR.
Insert DVDR (DVD-R or DVD+R) and click OK
(As someone reported this process took very long, I must add this.)
Instead of using TMPGEnc DVD Author's built-in burning capability,
Close the program and fire up Nero Version 6.
TMPGEnc DVD Author created two folders.
C:\DVD\Volume 1\AUDIO_TS
C:\DVD\Volume 1\VIDEO_TS
Drag
\AUDIO_TS &\VIDEO_TS to Nero's DVD-Video Compilation window.
And then burn.
That's all.
If you use older Nero, there is no DVD-Video Compliation
Window. For older Nero, burn it as DVD-ROM (ISO/UDF)
and "Force DVD-Video compatibility mode".

(What's version 1.1 or 1.2 or 2 or 3)
V1.1 or 1.2 is a situation that I made SVCD or VCD or DVDR discs and watched the movie
on TV. And I noticed several minor problems. So I went back to SMI and made some
corrections.
V2 or 3 is very different.
If I like the movie, I watch it many times. Ex. Welcome back Mr. McDonald.
This SMI has Version 3. If you have Version 1 SMI, compare it. You shall find big
differences between the two. It is not the same as I read SMI and correct lines
by making up stories. (This should not be done at any costs.)
I pick one or two characters in the movie and make sure the way he talks reflects
in Eng Sub. As a result, some of his speech must be altered from Version 2 to
reflect this character's flavor.
More notes
My sub is quite different from the subs you are accustomed to.
1: You are used to SRT format. Mine is SMI format.
2: You used to see two entries on a screen.
ex
-Hello
-Hi.
Unless absolutely necessary, I will separate these into 2
independent screen.
3.Unless absolutely necessary, I will translate words as
close as possible. Spoken Japanese contain more
information than what you usually see in SRT Eng sub.
What it means is that Subber dropped whatever he
thinks is OK or he does not understand and make up
his own story. Sometimes thriller or suspense type of
movies, dropped parts play a big role later. ( And
you wonder how this guy knew or found the culprit...)
4. I do not make up stories. Very often subber has
no idea what was being spoken. So he tends to make
up stories by watching the movie.
In one drama series, Singapore TV's Eng sub was miserable.
A key was to keep a very sick patient alive.
Sub wrote: I had administered Oxygin 5 times thicker than
usual. Breathing pure oxygen is fatal. Now you applied
5 times thicker? Are you killing him? or was that 3 times?
Who cares? Subber must not make up stories.
Which drama was this? (Ring the Final Chapter)
5. There are terms only Japanese know. It is not a
good idea to give you alternative. (Not the same, but
maybe similar..?) In that case, you will find footnotes.
Extreme example.
In Trick The movie, Physicist Ueda uttered one line.
I solved Fermat's Last Theorem in my freshman year.
How many of you (or us) know Fermat's Last Theorem?
What the hell is that?
Then, on screen, you will find the digested footnotes
as follows.
The statement of Fermat's Last Theorem is about as simple as any mathematical proposition could be:
The equation has no solution for non-zero integers x, y, and z if n is an integer greater than 2.Theorem A:
Mild example.
Ojyo=short form of Ojyo-sama or Ojyosan, which means "daughter." In this case, a lady boss.
This shows up on screen, while sub uses the term Ojyo.
There is no way to translate Ojyo in Gokusen. If anyone changed this term with
Lady Boss or Boss' daughter,etc., you are not getting the good sub at all.
The same is true with Gokudo and Yakuza.
Gokudo is not the same as Yakuza.
Yakuza is very different from Gokudo.
Full Metal Gokudo ... Why this movie's international title is Full Metal Yakuza?
Wrong Concept. If we go by *** like restaurant guide, Gokudo is 4 stars
and Yakuza has no star. Therefore, Yakuza cannot be Gokudo.
Gokudo can be Yakuza.
What it means is that when I translate words, I must know
what it means. ( How can I translate something if I have no idea what it is.)
So I must do a quick study. Whatever I learned will appear as
footnotes.
As a result...
If you do not like any elements, open smi with notepad and
edit anyway you want.
ex
Subtitle position (Top Left Top Center Top Right, Center, etc.)
Subtitle Normal, Italic
Color code
or sub-dialogs.
ex
Hello...if you think "Hi!" is better, change it to "Hi!"
Let me hear it...if you think, "I'm all ears." is better, change it.
Also there are footnotes of the Japanese specific items.
Mr. Mrs. Ms, etc., had been intentionally changed the same way
the Japanese use.
Ex Mr. Kobayashi ( He is a school teacher)
Instead, sub will say Kobayashi Sensei or Teacher Kobayashi.
If you don't like it, change it back to Mr. Kobayashi
The same is true with One-san, Onii-chan, etc.
The name of the game is that if you can get used to these,
you have no problems in understanding spoken Japanese.
And your Japanese friends will feel it at home, if you could
speak this way.
Some background information on each dialog has been
added.

If it is too much or you don't need such detail, just get rid of lines.
Anyway, before you jump into AVI (hard sub) or SVCD conversion,
watch avi with Eng sub on your computer. And you do some
corrections. The use of Spell checker often corrected spells into
something else...because of massive additions of the Japanese words
to the original English words.
Lately, I noticed some Eng subs use Japanese styles for
names. This is a good thing! People who learn Japanese from
these Eng subs will feel it much easier when they talk with
native Japanese speakers.

Also this time, I have used Impact and Comic Sans fonts -a part of
Windows XP default, thus, there shouldn't be any problems for
Windows Users. If you have problems, get rid of these entries
before conversion to SRT or other formats.

oh, no....I got problem, even from the first step x)
When I open the AVI file video with VirtualDub, it said:
"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DX50' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."
what should I do? HELP!!

everytime you have problem with codecs and plugins, just google search virtualdub and the missing codec. I was able to solve an avi codec problem this way. However, please evaluate the site before installing anything. Most codec installers are exe files so they're potentially dangerous.

before i use this virtualdub filters, it goes so well, but sum thing wrong happen with it. I dont see the "Textsub v 2.23" anymore. I tried to set up this program again ( virtualdub, and VobSub_2.23.exe) but i still dont see it. can some one tell me y? thanks
