I've got a hold of Nemureru Mori DVDs and I've already transcribed 2+1/2 episodes. I've also already encoded episode 1 with hardsubs. But I'm still unsure of what's better for everybody. Some people asked me if I'm going to edit those subtitles and correct some mistakes. I found some possible mistakes myself while transcribing but as I'm not a native English speaker I can never be sure whether the subtitles were really wrong or just a structure that's unusal to me... Hard subtitles can't be corrected once rendered on the video, soft subtitles can, so other people can do it. If I send the video & subtitles to somebody else to edit the subtitles, it will take ages till you see the next episodes coming... So no way of pre-edited hardsubs...
Anyway, so vote here: hardsubs or softsubs for Nemureru Mori remake???

Just say what you prefer; If you're unsure about this, don't vote. Thanks.

I'll keep this poll running till 3rd of June, or till it clears out by a big percentage.

I voted for hard subtitles. I like how you did the hard subs in your previous works, so please continue the trend.

Soft subtitles have many advantages. Unfortunately, one of those advantages is making eBay selling and other forms of bootlegging too easy to do, which shoots down all of those advantages IMO.

groink: I get what you are saying, but for those who would like to get the DVDs themselves after seeing the show, it would be great with soft subtitles. I haven't seen this show myself yet but it has Miho Nakayama in it so... If the choice is Hard Subbed, would there be any way of getting soft subtitles "to go"? or is it "absolute" with one or the other?

I prefer Hard Subs. A LOT. A lot less fuss, just open the video and there you go. Wub

This is a real toughy.

On the one hand, I like soft subs because it allows me to choose which font to use, what size to use and where exactly to place the fonts. With hard subs, I get none of those choices. I am all about choices for the end users. However, I also don't like these ebay sellers profitting off of fansubbers' efforts.

I have to agree with Groink on this one. As much as I do enjoy the control of having soft subs, I think for the protection of the fansubber him/her self, it's better to publicly distribute hardsubbed versions rather than softsubbed versions.

I'll vote in favor of hard subs.

Hard-subbed verison is my choice. For the sake of my dvd-cd-player, no other reason for it.
So I vote for the hard subs.

I think that soft subs are better in a way because of correcting mistakes and also if (as myself) want to translate it to another language it will be easier. So I go with Softsubs.

I'll vote for hard subs. I don't use to modify soft subs and it's easier to play the file on dvd players, so for me it's the best.
Thanks for your work, this is a great drama!

I voted for hardsubs, and okumasama, on the issue of correcting or retranslating parts of the show - when I watched it I felt the translation job was fine as it was... I think you should only correct things like spelling mistakes, etc, if there were any. Just the minor things, because I think once you get into re-translating the minor translation errors, they'll just keep piling up, you know what I mean? From what I remember, the translation was pretty accurate.

It was a few months ago when I watched it, though.

okumasama: i am currently watching 'tokyo love story', and i think your subs are great. if you are a non-english speaker, you did a SUPERB job on the subbing. there are a few spelling/grammar errors here or there, and the timing is slightly off during some of the 'fast dialogues', but overall, i still think it's very commendable work.

that being said, i like softsubs because i would have the option to edit them, but at the same time, i agree with others here in that it would be very susceptible to ebay hawkers. therefore, it would probably be best if you had someone perform one final quality check and release it as hardsubs.

Although I really enjoy that "soft" subs don`t "get in the way" (in the good way) of the picture, I would certainly hate that someone else got a profit from it while you spend so much of your time doing this for free so I voted for hard subs. To be honest I`m pleased enough having a good quality encode, either soft or hard subbed, so please keep on with your great releases, they`re all very much appreciated okumasama Big Smile

I see most people want hard-subs, so I'm releasing episode 1 hardsubbed today. Thanks for the ones that voted.
edit: actually the site won't let me upload for some reason, so I'll upload later.

I love hardsubbed. I just pop them into the DVD player and that's that. I'm not very "techie" with the computer and for me it's so much more enjoyable in the time that I have to just watch and enjoy and let me add that I so much appreciate your work, I just can not thank you enough.
