Thank you.
Title: Xian Jian Qi Xia Zhuan; Chinese Paladin, Ep 20 (of 34) Subs: English topsubs Format: .avi, ~334MB, hardsubbed
This is Episode 20 of the Chinese wuxia fantasy (emphasis on fantasy) series 'Chinese Paladin,' or Xian Jian Qi Xia Zhuan.
Another character appears briefly here...(played by Li Bing Bing)
There is a small bit in this ep that's involved with Daoism (Taoism) and a lot of it is beyond me, since it's rather poetic and 'deep'. Since it's not vital to the understanding of the plot, and rather than butcher the translation, I just skipped it. It's basically a chant about the human, Immortal and ghost Dao, and how you should better yourself and strive for the Immortal/Good Way rather than the Ghost/Demon/Evil Way, etc.
Xiao Yao uses an idiom in this episode: 'Old Man Sai loses a horse; how do you know it's not fortune?' The folktale behind it is too involved to explain in the video. So just click here if you'd like to know the story of Old Man Sai and the horse; I'll retell the version I know.
Hidden:
There was an old wise man surnamed Sai who owned a beautiful, expensive horse that was his pride and joy. One day, it busted its fence and ran off. The villagers all sympathized and came to comfort him, but Old Man Sai didn't look sad and just said, 'How do you know it's not fortune?'
A few days later, his horse returned with a gorgeous mare and Old Man Sai now had two beautiful horses. The villagers all said he was truly wise, since he had guessed that the bad event would become a good one. But Old Man Sai looked depressed and just said, 'How do you know it isn't misfortune?'
His son became obsessed with the new mare and rode the horse every day. One day, the mare threw his son, who broke his leg. Even when it healed, he couldn't walk the same again. The villagers once again came to comfort Old Man Sai, but he didn't look as sad as they would've expected. He once again said, 'How do you know it isn't fortune?'
Some time later, the country went to war. All the young men of the village were called away to be soldiers and most of them died on the battlefield, all but Old Man Sai's son, because of his bad leg.
Message: things aren't always what they seem, bad can be good and good can be bad.
Once again, next ep towards the end of next week. I will let everyone know when I can start putting out more than one at once, but I can't manage that at the moment.
Edit: just realized I must've been asleep earlier editing through. The idiom should be: "Old Man Sai loses a horse", not "watches." Sorry 'bout that.
