A fundamental shift in fansubbing sounds nice, but when (at least in jdramas) there are groups that claim to have been created to just focus on a specific idol, that's where we get a lot of the competition when a given producer chooses to cram a bunch of them onto one show.
And unfortunately, changes at the source, as great as they would be (I would love to see more diversity in available dramas for sure) I still think doesn't solve the original problem of why we're all here, lamers disregarding requests to not put works online. There will always be those that prefer streaming for whatever reason and those who will put it up online.
I think many of us have politely asked that works be taken down but when are requests are met with silence and any attempts to educate others on our disagreement with streaming have been removed from their sites, it's the continued lack of willingness from them to dialog that makes us realize that such effort is useless.
As for trying to win back over their fans, again it's probably another losing battle. There have been already plenty of reasons that people watch streamed dramas over downloading them and for their situations, it appears they won't change.
But I'm guess what you're proposing SuiginChou is not to focus our efforts on streaming sites directly because there's no way we'll probably take them down (counter to the original post of this thread, but again, discussion is healthy) but to limit the damage by just converting as many fans over to D-addicts. Maybe in the current situation, where streaming is an entrenched part of the internet, the best compromise we can hope for is to get as many viewers *away* from there.

Well, I guess I work at an internet company, so I really do see video moving to streaming in the future. You cannot ask the viewers to sacrifice convenience; you can only give them a better choice. As much as I love and have been ranting about leechers and streamers, this is the situation we are in.
Obviously, we can either give them streaming or not give them streaming. So this gives us two choices:
a.) Subbers re-encode a completely awful, LQ version of each video that has barely legible subs and upload them onto streaming. That way, if people upload a higher quality version up there, the subbers can say, no, we only want to LQ version up there. Then, you can put watermarks on there (in HQ) of where to find the HQ versions. For those people who are willing to put up with the LQ... well, it just goes to show that people are willing to put up with anything for a bit of convenience.
b.) Go underground. I agree with SuiginChou that if we do, we shouldn't talk about it. I don't say this because of "rudeness" or "respect" or what not. I say it simply because underground is meant to be secret. If it's broadcasted, then why bother? After all, who would be able to screen out the streaming-uploaders when they join? (I certainly don't know who they are, or which IP they use, or anything remotely useful like that.) So it would have to be a "I trust you so I'm telling you and inviting you" sort of deal.
I personally vote with option a. It's more foolproof.

DC is recruiting translators, qcers, editors so they could fansub more because I guess they don't have enough content to steal.
What really pisses me off is how they brazenly post licensed movies on the site (ie. Death Note, Kung Fu Hustle, and many others). They're just asking for major trouble.
Also it's sad that the drama world has disrespectful @$$holes like DC and MySoju. SARS' motto is to provide high quality English subbed content for fans for free. But with people like them who kill the spirit of fansubbing, it's not as fun as it used to be.

| There is too much hard work being put to subbing dramas. Those cowboy stream sites ought to be buried for eternity.

thank you for understanding.
have a nice day. |
It's one thing to express some negative opinions about someone (or a pair of people) online, but another to suggest (and seemingly try to recruit people for the purpose of) beating them into the ground. I don't know where you live, but what you're saying is unnecessary and borderline stupid (perhaps illegal?). I really suggest deleting your comment, even though it has been through more than a day of exposure. You make followers of "fansubbers" seem like goons of some mindless mob.
The best part of this thread (and related ones) is that "fansubbers" want their illegal activities respected by leechers, and subsequently complain about streaming sites profiting off "their works" (sub-standard 4-kyuu JPLT level translations - honestly, I've seen subs where "ne?" and notes like *sorry don't know this part* are included within every other line in the English translation...hilarious) because they aren't getting their fair share. It was only about controlling the annoying mob of fans begging for subs (LJ community and their ilk) and throwing them a bone or two when a subber feels like it until someone had the brilliant idea of providing links to stream the files instead.
Good on MySoju and Dramacrazy for leading the pack. Why don't the independent subbers provide their own releases via streaming (viewers tend to value availability over video quality anyways)? Scared of being slapped with a C&D letter (but I thought the subbing group leaders were going to take the full brunt of the flak for it...)? People who slap text over files they rob from the broadcasting company become irate when another group of fools steals from them to (supposedly) turn a profit. Unclean hands everywhere.

| Well I support SARS, but mysoju has been active for years...... And well I think that we need to understand something. As fas as I know It is illegal when the DVD or VIDEO or whatever is distributed in your county, so we already know that not so many dramas are distributed in this side of the Continent, so lets just enjoy the Dramas that as much as SARS and MySoju or any other Fansub bring us to the Internet, and let's stop arguing about silly things....!!

You have the nerve to insult translators yet this sentence is incorrect?
Anyway, no, fansubbing isn't over. And it hasn't been futile and we're not going to lose.
The day fansubbing dies is when you have no fansubs to watch.
